heal.abstract The behaviour of novel metal matrix composites and their respective matrix alloys is studied in the present work from the fracture mechanics point of view. A series of experiments were executed in single edge notched specimens with various initial crack inclinations and the crack opening displacement was recorded versus externally applied load. An empirical criterion was established permitting easy, in-situ inspection of the safety and further loading capacity of cracked structural members, already in function. © 1996 Kluwer Academic Publishers.
