heal.abstract The response of a series of plates having the same mass, but differing areas and damping, was measured. The excitation was with an impact hammer applied at a series of locations on the plate(s). The purpose of the experiment was first, to determine the accuracy of a simple energy balance (SEA) prediction of response, and second, to give guidance in a general problem of foundation design. That problem is whether to make a foundation flexible, and therefore allow vibrational energy to be damped, or to make the structure as rigid as possible. en
