The dependence of the nitration rates of toluene in an aqueous phase on reaction temperature and mixed acid composition has been examined. Ternary solutions HNO3-H2SO4-H2O with compositions normally employed in industrial applications have been used as the nitration medium. The activation energy was found to increase with an increase in either the HNO3 content of the nitration medium at constant water content or the H2O content at constant HNO3 content. A kinetic equation is proposed which is applicable over the whole range of conditions used. © 1992 American Chemical Society. |
