Abstract
In many scienti c elds, such as sociology, biology and even medicine,
there is an increasing research interest in studying the formation of correla-
tions between the respective units of analysis. These systems for recording
relationships are called networks . Through Graph Theory it becomes pos-
sible to mathematically and graphically model and analyze these networks.
Networks are either weighted or not weighted depending on the nature of
their links, i.e. the relations they record. Not weighted networks are those
in which all links are equivalent, whereas in weighted networks each link is
given a weight, depending on the importance of the role it plays. The main
characteristics of a network, which shape it, are the number of its links and
the degree distribution of its nodes, where degree is the number of nei-
ghboring nodes. To further understand networks, various measures of node
importance have been proposed. The importance of a node is quanti ed and
measured, among others, by centrality measures, which are mostly based on
the degrees or distances of nodes and considering various criteria measure
the centrality, and thus under di erent prisms importance of a node. In most
real networks, community formation is observed. Communities are de ned
as groups of closely connected nodes. Several methods have been proposed
to detect the existence and form of community network structure, some of
which are presented in this paper. The motivation for writing this paper
was the proposed method of approaching the analysis of a weighted network
by studying the corresponding not weighted network. For this purpose, by
extracting data from the oral history archive Istorima , two networks were
created, a weighted and the corresponding not weighted one. By analyzing
them with the tools and comparing the results, which are presented in th-
is paper, it became clear that the universal, even generalized, use of this
approach is inadequate, as it is not unlikely that a signi cant amount of
information of the network structure and characteristics is lost during this
estimation. |
