heal.abstract Macroplastic pollution is a growing environmental crisis, with an estimated 11 million metric tons of plastic waste entering the oceans each year—a figure expected to nearly triple by 2040 if no action is taken. The majority of this pollution originates from land-based sources, including poorly managed waste systems, urban runoff, and littering, particularly in coastal regions and developing countries. Macroplastics, defined as plastic debris larger than 5 mm, consist largely of single-use items such as bags, bottles, and fishing gear. Once in the marine environment, they can persist for decades, harming wildlife through entanglement and ingestion, disrupting ecosystems, and breaking down into microplastics. A significant portion of this debris accumulates in ocean gyres, such as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, while the rest sinks to the seafloor or washes up on shorelines, creating long-term ecological and economic impacts. This thesis develops a comprehensive Lagrangian-type numerical model to simulate the movement of floating and near-surface macroplastic debris, with particular emphasis on the interplay of ocean currents, wind-induced drift (windage), and wave-driven Stokes drift. The model explicitly incorporates object-specific characteristics such as size and density, allowing for a more physically realistic representation of plastic particle behavior in the marine environment. The modeling framework is implemented in Python and is composed of two main components: (1) the initialization and spatial-temporal interpolation of environmental forcing fields (wind, waves, currents) using data from Copernicus Marine Service and ECMWF; and (2) the particle tracking module, which computes macroplastic trajectories using a custom equation of motion that integrates all relevant transport mechanisms and drag effects. To assess the model's accuracy, validation was performed against experimental observations from a scaled 3D physical model at the fishing shelter of Kato Pyrgos, Cyprus, where the behavior of Posidonia oceanica replicas was analyzed under controlled wave and current conditions. The model successfully replicated key observed transport patterns, including eddy trapping, longshore currents, and beaching behavior. Following validation, the model was applied to the Saronikos Gulf, Greece—a semi-enclosed marine region of high ecological and commercial value. Simulations revealed that under variable meteorological conditions there is not a single primary driver of macroplastic transport. Ocean currents, at least in the open of the Saronikos area and for the modelled cases, have a steady contribution to macroplastic transport, while windage and Stokes drift play complementary roles. More specifically, currents constitute 10 to 30% of the total transport velocity of the particles steadily. Depending on the particle’s density, windage contribution to total transport ranges from 9% (in high plastic densities) up to 50% (in low plastic densities) while Stokes drift’s contribution ranges from 20% (in low densities) up to 50% (in high densities). Density is generally proven to be the most critical parameter of motion, while size (at least in the selected ranges) does not have any significant effect. The outcomes highlight the model's potential as a tool for identifying accumulation zones and informing targeted mitigation strategies. This work contributes to the growing body of research on marine litter dynamics by integrating recent advancements in wave-particle interaction theory and offers a flexible, open-source modeling approach suitable for regional-scale applications. Future work may include the incorporation of stochastic processes, field data calibration, and the extension of the model to multi-particle or ensemble simulations. en
