| el |
| heal.abstract | This thesis explores gravitational theories with the presence of torsion. In the first chapter, after a brief introduction to the tetrad and differential forms formalisms, we study Einstein-Cartan theory, a minimal extension of General Relativity that assumes a non-vanishing torsion. More specifically, the Lagrangian formulation of Einstein-Cartan theory is given in terms of the decomposition of the torsion tensor into its irreducible components. In the second chapter, the theory of Quantum Electrodynamics is considered in contorted spacetimes, with a dual purpose. The first is to show that in such a theory, spin is connected to torsion, much like mass is connected to curvature in General Relativity. More specifically, spin densities (more specifically, fermions) act as sources for torsion. The second is to show that, by making a reasonable assumption, torsion can instead be physically realized as an axion in a torsion-free spacetime. In the third chapter we extend our considerations on Einstein-Cartan theory. Our starting point is the Holst term and its significance in the formulation of Loop Quantum Gravity as a generator of the Ashtekar variables. We consider the case where the "torsionful" Holst term is added to the Einstein-Cartan action and show that this leads to inconsistencies. To fix this, we "complete" the Holst term by adding an additional term to the action in order to form the Nieh-Yan term, a topological invariant. Then, we give another argument as to why the vanishing of the Nieh-Yan term must be imposed as a constraint, which leads to torsion being realized as an axion. Finally, we comment on the fact that the existence of the anomalous chiral current leads to the introduction of a Chern-Simons term. Thus, Einstein-Cartan theory can be transformed into a dynamical Chern-Simons theory without torsion. Finally, in the fourth chapter we consider a string-inspired model, in which the field strength of the Kalb-Ramond field takes on the role of torsion and thus behaves analogously with the torsion in Einstein-Cartan theory, producing an axionic degree of freedom. This theory is explored further, showing how, due to the anomalies present in the string theory, gravitational wave condensates in the early universe can explain inflation. This is done through an alternative cosmological model to Λ-Cold Dark Matter (ΛCDM), called the Running Vacuum Model. In the last (fifth) chapter, the analysis is taken one step further, by considering the higher order O(a') corrections to the heterotic string effective action. In this case, the action is subject to field redefinition ambiguities. By imposing unitarity and interpretation of the Kalb-Ramond field-strength as torsion, one can show that, although in 10D these requirements are conflicting, in 4D they are not. Thus, we get a 4D action, quadratic in the Kalb-Ramond field strength, which we integrate out of the path-integral. This leads to an extra term compared to the previous analysis, a non-minimal derivative coupling of the axion to the Ricci tensor. We end our discussion by showing that this extra term has subleading effects in the condensate and, thus, inflation. The work done in this chapter is novel and has been published. | en |
