This thesis attempts to define the relationship between animals and technology. The claim that non-human animals possess technology and civilization is investigated, considering that the former is a crucial component of the latter. Examining this issue could provide a more comprehensive picture of what the ethical treatment of non-human animals by humans should be. Through a historical retrospective, the relationships between humans and other animals are highlighted from the moment they began to be perceived separately during the Paleolithic era and up to the modern one, when the exploitation of animals has reached its peak. However, in recent decades, there has been a growing effort, both in theory and in practice, to include animals –or at least some of them– in our moral universe. Various contemporary ethical theories have, of course, contributed to this fact, something which is also reflected in the legislation of many countries. In Greece, there is now particularly strict legislation for the protection of animals, especially companion animals. In the context of this specific investigation, an empirical study was conducted on a sample of postgraduate students and teachers. The findings of the study are intertwined with historical, social and ethical elements, and data in order to sketch a first picture of what the ethical treatment of animals could be if the claim that these beings possess technology were accepted. |
