heal.abstract This thesis examines the development of auditable and explainable mechanisms for credit-scoring decisions through the combined use of machine learning and computational argumentation. First, a logistic regression model is developed to estimate a customer’s probability of default on the basis of financial and credit-related characteristics. The numerical output of the model is then converted into an operational decision of approval, rejection, or further review through predefined decision thresholds. An argumentation-based explanation layer is subsequently constructed on top of the predictive model. The customer’s characteristics are transformed into arguments supporting or opposing loan approval, while the strength of each argument is calculated on the basis of the model coefficients and the distance between the observed feature value and the corresponding policy threshold. Through a deterministic conflict-resolution and defeat mechanism, the system produces “why” and “why-not” explanations, presenting both the reasons that supported the final decision and the opposing reasons that were defeated. In addition, counterfactual scenarios are generated in order to identify the minimum changes in the customer’s characteristics that could lead to a different decision. All intermediate steps are recorded in a detailed audit trail, enabling the decision-making process to be reproduced and verified. The proposed approach does not replace the underlying credit-scoring model; instead, it operates as a transparent, structured, and auditable explanation layer on top of it. en
