heal.abstract Stress corrosion cracking (SCC) susceptibility of 5052 (Al-2.5 wt% Mg) was investigated. The experiments were performed by measuring the time-to-failure (TTF) under conditions of applied anodic current. The applied stresses (σ) were in the region where SCC is observed (threshold stress < σ < yield point) in the 3.5% NaCl solution, which was used for the corrosive medium. The oriented growth of γ1-Al2O3 cells and the orientation of the stress axis of the specimen both simultaneously influence the TTF during SCC tests. Our unnotched specimens, the primary determining factor is the oriented growth of γ1-Al2O3 cells; longer TTFs were observed when the stress axis of the specimen was horizontal. For notched specimens, the orientation of stress axis of the specimen was the main determining factor; longer TTFs were observed when the stress axis of the specimen was vertical (horizontal notch). en
