heal.abstract In this investigation a closed-form solution of the non-linear and buckling analysis of a thin and long straight bar, lying on an elastic foundation, is achieved by means of a strict mathematical procedure concerning the solution of the strongly non-linear differential equation θ″″ + 3θ′θ″′ tan θ + (1 + 3tan2θ)θ′2θ″ + θ″2 tan θ (λ1″/cosθ) + +(λ2θ′2 tan θ/ cos θ) = λ3sin θ cos2θ; (λ1;λ2;λ3; = constants), which governs the deflected elastica of the structure. This solution is constructed for values of the slope ≡ lying inside the interval [0°, 40°), because this interval is of practical interest for engineering structures, and, futhermore, the proposed approximations herein are accurate enough for this interval. Several functional transformations are used and a quantitative analysis is developed yielding reliable results, in conformity with the physical problem. The functional transformations introduced are original and useful in succeeding to solve similar problems in non-linear elasticity. © 1989. en
