It is shown that in cubic (uniaxial) crystals with more than one (two) long-wavelength polar phonons, the volume dependence of the mode effective charge can be expressed in terms of such measurable quantities as the mode frequencies, their Grüneisen parameters, and the electronic values of optical constants. Sum rules are established and also conditions for the validity of the Lyddane-Sachs-Teller relation for individual modes. The analysis is based on the classical oscillator model without damping and assumes a general direction for the mode propagation. © 1989. |
