Proton transport in hydrated lysozyme powders is studied by means of the thermally stimulated depolarisation current (TSDC) method in the temperature range 77-300 K and the water content range 0.070-0.610 w/w. The results imply the existence of two separate proton transport processes. The corresponding dispersions were studied in detail by means of thermal sampling and partial heating techniques. They were found to be multiple with both activation energy W and pre-exponential factor tau-0 being distributed parameters. The spectra of W and tau-0 were determined at several water contents. Both dispersions become faster with increasing water content. The temperature and water content of their saturation can be related to critical water contents and possible structural changes of the protein and the hydration layers. |
