heal.abstract Tensor polynomial failure theory constitutes a flexible limiting strength condition which cannot, however, be considered as a failure criterion since some failure tensor components involved remain undefined. Because of this inconvenience authors trying to estimate values for the missing components of failure tensors will arbitrarily neglect normal stress interaction terms. This choice corresponds to some new failure condition, which, in a principal stress frame, is represented by a closed ellipsoidal surface oriented along the coordinate axes. Thus, the existence of three-dimensional loading paths not leading to failure is overlooked, and predictions of this criterion when compared with experimental data relating to the influence of triaxial stress states on material strength are erroneous. Apparent corroboration of experimental data in off-axis strength and biaxial tests by the tensor polynomial criterion with zero normal stress interaction terms, reported in the literature, was shown to be only superficial. It was concluded that the arbitrary zeroing of off-diagonal failure tensor components should be avoided. © 1990. en
