heal.abstract Dugdale-Barenblatt (D-B)-type plastic zones developed ahead of cracks in orthotropic plates subjected to simple tension were studied by the method of caustics. Using the D-B model the components of the plastic stress field around the crack tip were derived which created new shapes of the caustics because of the influence of plasticity and anisotropy. A relationship between the plastic stress intensity factor, KIP, and typical geometric elements of the caustics may be established by means of convenient graphs. Application of the method to polycarbonate tension specimens with transverse edge cracks, drawn conveniently to present any amount of anisotropy, indicated the potentialities of the method. © 1992. en
