The influence of singularities on the evolution of ultrasound attenuation for materials was studied experimentally. The specimens used were made of plexiglas. They were prismatic with or without an edge crack, normal to the edge, or a V-shaped notch. The specimens were loaded in tension gradually until fracture. The load level and the degree of the singularity correlated experimentally to the degree of ultrasound attenuation. An ultrasonic pulse echo signal was used to investigate and measure the degree of attenuation, for the ultrasonic stress wave propagating through the stressed specimens. © 1992. |
