Preparation and characterization of activated phenolic fibres were carried out and followed by study of the sorptive properties from aqueous solutions. An almost linear dependence of the adsorption capacity on the yield was found, but a material formed at 55-60% yield was found suitable when considering additional factors. Such products can be prepared by heating phenolic fabrics at 430°, for 5 min. Their surface area was found to be < 300 m2/g. The molecular size of the adsorbed compounds has a strong effect on the adsorption rate; molecular shape and polarity must also be taken into consideration. © 1993. |
