heal.abstract The elastic lateral post-buckling response in the vicinity of the critical bifurcational state is examined for the case of a perfect beam, with a monosymmetric I-section, under uniform bending, in which the Wagner effect is taken into account. The governing equations, in which the warping effect of the cross-section is included, are highly nonlinear owing to the nonlinear bending moment-curvature relationship. The stability of the critical state, associated with a stable-symmetric bifurcation point, is analytically established by employing a simple and comprehensive approach. Hence, the beams are not sensitive to imperfections, exhibiting post-buckling strength. However, the post-buckling equilibrium path is quite shallow, so that the load-carrying capacity of such beams, above the critical state, is limited. The analysis is supplemented by an illustrative example. © 1994. en
