In this paper the necessity of a system-based approach to the development of technology and equipment for discrete production, in particular for machining and assembly, is considered. A functional model of a CAPP-system is proposed to enable, in CIM conditions, the optimisation both of the structure of the product and of the technical system to fabricate this product, using the criteria specified by the user. The specific applications of this approach at different hierarchical levels in conditions of small batch production with an often changed production programme are considered. The integration of this CAPP-system with an interactive expert system allows for the use of the experience and knowledge of the user. © 1994 Springer-Verlag London Limited. |
