heal.abstract The finite element stress analysis is used to determine the expected displacements and stresses in the encasing concrete of the scroll case of a Francis turbine. The minimum principal stress in all cases examined is compressive and has higher concentrations close to the stay ring supports. The maximum principal stress indicates tensile stress areas at the inside concave faces of the cross sections, which are extended into most of the central area of the cross section, around the horizontal plane of symmetry of the turbine. The displacements are within the allowed width of the asphalt cork liner of the scroll case. © 1995. en
