Wheat straw pulped by acid prehydrolysis, gas chlorination and hot alkaline extraction, was beaten in a Valley beater and in it blender, and the effect of the process parameters on the mechanical strength and brightness of the pulp was studied. The tensile and bursting strengths are affected by the extent of alkaline extraction, while the beating process, folding resistance and tearing strength are mainly influenced by the length of the pulp fibres and are affected by all the examined parameters, whereas the pulp brightness is influenced by the extent of the pulping conditions and the use of the Valley beater. |
