heal.abstract The concept of maximum reduction of the potential energy is coupled with the least squared error method, for the selection of the optimum solution for the stress intensity factors of cracks, symmetrically placed, in finite rectangular plates. Satisfaction of the boundary conditions is sought through the use of either boundary stress equations, or traction equations along internal sections (lines) of the plate, or traction equations along the boundary. Numerical results are close to the analytical ones, while not being sensitive to the change of disposition of the collocation points. Copyright (C) 1996 Elsevier Science Ltd en
