The curvature ductility factor of RC columns depends mainly on the axial force, the transverse reinforcement (quantity and pattern) and the material properties. In this paper the above basic variables are considered as random variables. Using the Monte Carlo simulation, the probabilistic parameters of the resulting curvature ductility factor are calculated. For different values of the axial force and percentage of confinement, the characteristic values of the ductility are obtained. In this way, a rational calculation of the required confinement is produced. Parametric and sensitivity studies are carried out and the results are compared with the proposed values in Eurocode no. 8 for structures in seismic zones.
