The governor operation is of most importance during engine steady-state and transient conditions for best response of the governed machine (diesel engine, gas turbine, water turbine etc) and therefore optimum performance and pollutant-emission minimisation. The present work analyses the operation of the direct-acting governor equipped with four different sensing elements: mechanical, electrical, hydraulic and two-pulse. For this purpose a FORTRAN program is produced for the analytical simulation of the governor under both steady-state and transient conditions. Explicit diagrams are provided for studying the effect of specific technical parameters on the governor operation, as evaluated with the help of the developed program. Nonetheless since it is often difficult to acquire exact values for all governor technical data needed for the above detailed analysis, a second approach is also presented, applicable in general for the transient operation of any type of governor. This approach requires only a few experimental data for the calibration of the governor model's constants and provides very good results when applied to transient tests of the same engine at other operating conditions.
