In polar cubic crystals under strain, the splittings of long-wavelength optical phonon frequencies depend on the direction of propagation. It is shown that for propagation in specific directions the splittings disappear. Such spatial degeneracies are depicted through geometrical structures known as frequency quadrics, and resemble analogous situations of light propagation along the optic axes of biaxial crystals. |
