The aim of the present study was to develop ceramic pore structures with controlled properties by investigating the parameters affecting these properties. Alumina and aluminum titanate ceramics differing significantly in their pore structure (mean pore size in the range 1-50 μm and porosity in the range 30-50%) were developed for this purpose. It was found that the mean pore size of the ceramics developed depends strongly on the particle size distribution of the initial powder, while the porosity can be better adjusted through the organics addition. The bending strength depends directly on both porosity and mean pore size, decreasing as the value of these properties increases. However, by the proper combination of initial powders and processing conditions, ceramics of very open structure with good mechanical properties can be obtained. ©2002 Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland. |
