The potential for using bentonites to avoid ink speck formation during the deinking of old newspapers is investigated. Seven commercial Greek bentonites (a calcium-bentonite, an organophilic, an acid-activated and four alkaline-activated bentonites) were examined with respect to their mineral composition, physical properties and effect on deinking. The acid-activated bentonite aggregates the ink particles to larger sizes while the others disperse the ink particles to smaller sizes making them removable by washing. For each bentonite (except the acid-activated) there was an addition level to the furnish that practically eliminated ink speck formation. One of the alkali ne-activated bentonites exhibited high dispersion ability in water, relatively low Crystallinity and the best ink speck elimination efficiency. |
