Crucial task in merging of computer and communication technology is the microprocessor-network interface. Microprocessor Adapter (MA) is used to adapt the traffic to/from the ATM Network in terminals or in Interworking units and switches. Upstream direction should be controlled by a traffic shaper. This paper introduces a traffic shaping method and its circuit design and implementation. The circuit regulates the traffic injected into the ATM network, by enforcing specific traffic parameter values that have been agreed upon between the user and the network. It supports better bandwidth utilisation through an Effective Rate control algorithm, adaptive to traffic characteristics. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved. |
