IP-based applications are the prevailing trend of the telecommunications market, but the path towards the ""IP over everything"" target is not unhampered. The main shortcoming of the IP protocol is its lack of providing guaranteed Quality of Service (QoS), although significant effort is spent within different standardization bodies and organizations. At the same time, the tremendous increase of traffic, mostly data traffic, has drained the available deployed fibers resources. The introduction of the Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) technology has relieved this problem, however the usage of an additional transport technology increased the complexity of network operation and management. The proposed service and management framework allows the provisioning of guaranteed QoS IP services of WDM networks, by integrating service and network management layers. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2003. |
