When experimentation is expensive and the number of factors is large, supersaturated designs can be useful. They are fractional factorial designs in which the number of factors is greater than the number of experimental runs. Recently, Yamada and Lin (Statist. Probab. Lett. 45 (1999) 31) proposed a construction method for three-level supersaturated designs with the equal occurrence property. In this paper, we present some new construction methods for three-level supersaturated designs which are based on the weighing matrices and have the equal occurrence property. These designs have high efficiency. Furthermore, we can obtain supersaturated designs with the equal occurrence property, high efficiency and fewer columns through an algorithm which is also presented. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science B.V.
