The extent to which a channel of distribution creates an efficient flow of products from the producer to the consumer is a major concern of management. Due to the dynamic nature of the business environment, management must monitor and evaluate the performance of the distribution network regularly and frequently. Efficiency of a distribution network can translate into significant savings for a company. Nevertheless, the physical distribution has been recognised as one of the least managed areas of marketing, leaving great room for improvement. The subject of this study is the management of the physical distribution of products-in a daily basis-with the best possible utilisation of the distribution devices and the human resources that the company owns. Software has been developed for evaluating customers and products, dividing the geographic zones, determining the priorities and planning the routes. © 2003 Elsevier Science Ltd.
