We demonstrate that the interaction between a two-dimensional localized wave packet and a continuous-wave background can lead to efficient x-wave generation in nonlinear bidispersive optical systems. This x-wave generation process was found to depend on both the relative phase and amplitude of the background with respect to the superimposed wave packet.
