heal.abstract An efficient method for predicting the unsteady wake contraction and rollup of a wake-adapted marine propeller is presented. The method is based on a Morino formulation of the unsteady propeller problem for an observer in an inertia - motionless - coordinate system. Thus, such problems as a propeller in inclined flow or a propeller performing any general motion (for example, heaving) can be directly simulated by the proposed method, as a by-product. The heart of the method is a time-stepping algorithm by which the dynamic evolution of the free wake is calculated in the time domain, satisfying the Helmholtz vortex theorems. The method has been applied to a number of steady and unsteady flow cases, and results are presented, showing that stable rollup wake patterns for a wide range of control parameters can be produced accompanied by good predictions for propeller forces and pressure distributions. en
