heal.abstract Predictions from a quasi-linear model of the transient operation of a turbocharged diesel engine are compared with results obtained from a more detailed, filling and emptying, non-linear code. An extended set of experimental tests under transient conditions has been carried out, which was used to evaluate the predictive capabilities of both models. These were mainly load acceptance tests that, nonetheless, constitute the most demanding cases for transient operation. The simplicity of the quasi-linear model, in combination with its low computational cost can prove, under certain circumstances, an interesting alternative to the engine researcher. This is particularly true if no detailed insight into the in-cylinder processes is required. For the latter, a more detailed analysis is needed as for example in zero-dimensional models.
