heal.abstract This work deals with the influence of the pure torsional (St. Venant) moment on deriving the elastoplastic interaction curves of internal forces and moments of a symmetrical I-section. The problem is addressed employing the exact theory of torsion. The simultaneous action of normal and shear stresses due to axial forces as well as bending and torsional moments is thoroughly investigated and the results are compared to the provisions of Eurocode 3 (EC3). Is has been found that the code's provisions are partly simplified formulae leading in most cases to uneconomic design. © Michaltsos and Raftoyiannis. en
