The study of the pH-dependent uptake of some ions of alkali, alkaline earth and transition metals of hydrous zirconium oxide establishes that the phenomenon depends not only upon the ionization constant for the hydroxyl group of sorbent but also upon the readiness with which the cation associates with the oxygen in the matrix. The simultaneous sorption of the anion and the estimation of the solution final pH prove that the anion is not sorbed only through the mechanism of ion exchange. On the basis of the experimental data for the sorption of ions by hydrous zirconia, a mechanism is proposed. I.R. spectral evidence suggests that the sorption of cations from acid solutions is accomplished through the surface hydroxyls of hydrous zirconia. The existence of many types of hydroxyl groups is also proved, suggesting that the exchange sites of the sorbent may be heterogeneous. © 1974. |
