The paper contains a preliminary analysis of the behavior of axially compressed columns after yielding. Mechanisms according to which a damaged column continues to carry load are theoretically investigated, as well as the shape of the load-total shortening curve. An analytical procedure for the determination of the 'falling branch' of the above curve is presented, followed by a numerical application of a typical-size column. In this application, four combinations of reinforcement buckling-modes and concrete spalling are taken into account. On the basis of the previous curves, an idealized load-total shortening curve is derived which can be considered as indicative of the behavior of similar columns. |
