A system of heating process air, consisting of flat-plate solar collectors and a thermal storage rock bed, is proposed to cover the thermal requirements of drying fruit and vegetable products. The capacity and the efficiency of the system were analysed using a computer simulation method. Meteorological data from the Athens area were used in the calculations. The optimum ratio of bed volume to collector surface was estimated to be near 0·20. An installation of a 400 m2 collector surface and an 80 m3 concrete storaage bed can provide more than 95% of the thermal duty of 1 m3 s-1 process air at 60°C during the 6 months from April to September. © 1986. |
