heal.abstract |
The minimum torsional rigidities are derived from the requirement that the ultimate stress for torsional buckling of the stiffener must be equal to the ultimate stress for plate buckling. These minimum torsional rigidities prevent failure of the stiffeners, so that failure takes place through the plate buckling mode. They supplement the known requirements for minimum bending rigidity that are derived according to plate buckling theory. The given values are much larger than those required by the present German codes. Design charts are given for different profiles of open stiffeners. |
