heal.abstract In this paper we report on experimental investigations into the explosive compaction of a high temperature superconducting powder, namely YBa2Cu3O7, to fabricate cylindrical shapes using as a die a steel, a copper and an aluminium/copper bimetallic container; a ""dry""-die with the explosive material directly surrounding the metallic container was employed. The ""soundness"" of the compact was examined with respect to the die-design and the compacting conditions used as well as to the properties of the superconducting powder and its initial temperature within the limits of the superconductivity and that of sintering. Microstructural changes and macro- and micro-defects in the compact are also indicated and discussed in terms of shock waves Propagated through the compact. © 1989 CIRP. en
