heal.abstract In this paper, we present a new decomposition scheme of the urban public transport scheduling problem. Our decomposition, which is motivated by the fact that in public transport crew costs dominate vehicle operating costs, differs from the traditional approach in that crew duties are developed first and then vehicle schedules are built around these crew duties. Results from the application of this method on real problems from the Athens Area Urban Transport Organization are presented. The insight on the structure of the public transport scheduling problem, gained from the proposed approach, is considered of major importance. en
