A series of tests is reported in which the cavity of a thick-walled hollow cylindrical sand specimen was inflated under volume-controlled plane strain conditions. Visual observations, radiographs and imprints of the cavity shape revealed the development of localized and diffuse deformation modes in the specimen. The localized deformation mode manifests itself as a curvilinear shear band whose occurrence is preceded by a surface rumpling diffuse mode. The loss of homogeneous axisymmetric deformation is associated with global softening of the curve of differential cavity pressure against cavity volume change. The shape of the shear band has been compared with various theoretical predictions as well as with biaxial compression test results. |
