heal.abstract	The synthesis of a reverse-osmosis (RO) desalination plant, by means of a prototype employing Object Oriented Programming techniques, is presented. This approach provides for a natural representation of the individual unit components as well as the reasoning process. It also ensures an open architecture system structure, easily amenable to further improvements. The behavioural part of knowledge is expressed in the form of qualitative IF-THEN rules. The design method is based on classes of objects which encapsulate the behavioural knowledge of the RO-Plant as well as the mechanisms for its exploitation. A two-level hierarchical design procedure was adopted, defining, on the first level, the general plant characteristics and, on the second level, the detailed structure of each stage. The design process continues adding more stages to the plant structure until the product quality conforms to the given specifications.	en
