This paper reviews the basic features of the MPEG video syntax, highlights its parameters which influence the produced traffic characteristics and presents a model (a 4-state Markov modulated rate process) of the output cell stream that can fit the block- or slice-level statistics. By using this model the performance of the ATM multiplexer, fed by a number of MPEG streams, is analyzed and the effects of the various parameters on its behavior are demonstrated. The derived results suggest useful traffic control actions. |
