A method is presented for shaping ATM traffic streams in order to enforce them to exhibit desired Effective Rates (ER) when statistically multiplexed with similar streams. Some background material with the definition and the basic properties of the ER is first reviewed. Then, the shaping algorithm, consisting in controlling the cell emission rate and the volume distribution of the generated bursts, is described. Finally, an architecture for implementing the shaping algorithm is outlined and its realisation on a VLSI chip is presented. |
