We address the question of whether boson mediators of high-$T_c$superconductivity are composite (electronic) or independent phonons. For s-wavesuperconductivity we show from the available experiments that the hypothesis ofcomposite bosons is rather unlikely. Our analysis points naturally towardsphonon mediators.
