For subjective and objective measurements carried out in two concert halls, a correlation analysis identified relationships between subjective acoustic factors obtained at live concerts with ordinary concert-goers, and measured physical room acoustic criteria. The subjective factor BODY correlated with the low frequency 80 ms early-to-late sound index and PROXIMITY with the total sound level, the early sound level, and the source-receiver distance. TONAL QUALITY was associated with the slope per octave of the early decay time. Factors BODY and TONAL QUALITY were also found to be influenced by an additional unidentified objective effect. Subjective CLARITY did not correlate with any of the measured physical criteria. By and large, these results are in agreement with earlier studies using dummy head recordings or from live concerts with expert listeners, and shed some light on the question of good acoustics, as perceived at live concerts by a wide cross-section of concert-goers. |
