The exact form and properties of an internal inclined crack in an infinite macroscopically isotropic plate under plane stress conditions submitted to a biaxial normal loading at infinity has been investigated. According to the exact theoretical solution of the problem, the shape of the deformed Griffith crack is an ellipse, the properties of which depend on the loading mode of the macroscopically isotropic plate and its mechanical properties. The mechanical properties of the material used in the present investigation were determined from tensile experiments. A theoretical model of the theory of elasticity was used to calculate the elastic constants of the iron particle reinforced epoxy resin plate. © 1996 The Institute of Materials. |
