The improvement of bonding quality of ion-plated thin manganese deposits on low carbon steel substrate may be achieved, using excimer laser irradiation, as a post-deposition surface treatment. The optimization of laser processing conditions results in crack and pore free tracks. The microscopical examination of the optimized laser tracks leads to the discrimination of intermediate alloyed layers, formed by mutual atomic diffusion during heating by laser beam, whilst the depths of these zones are a function of the process conditions used. The formation of these intermediate layers, with different morphology results in the formation of metallurgical bond and, consequently, in the enhancement of coating/substrate interface quality. The variation of the chemical composition in the near-subsurface region, the phase distribution and the roughness changes are also studied and discussed for the as-deposited as well for the excimer laser irradiated coating. |
