This article provides an overview of the work undertaken in the ACTS RAINBOW project to develop a flexible radio-independent architecture for UMTS, which will support both existing second-generation radio access and new third-generation radio interface(s). The architecture is developed by decomposing the system into transport-dependent, mobility-dependent, and service-dependent components. |
