In this article the design problems of high-frequency high-power gyrotrons, imposed by physical and technological constraints, are discussed along with a detailed description of the operating-mode selection procedure. In addition to the usual limitations of peak wall loading and limiting current, limitations related to the electron gun are included in the analysis and they are shown to restrict further the selection of possible operating modes. The steps for the detailed cavity design using numerical simulations for the rf wave - electron beam interaction is also presented. |
